Understanding Covid and Hearing Loss: Essential Information
2 min read
Don’t let poor hearing put you in jeopardy. We all know hearing loss can make communicating difficult, even in the best of times. During a medical crisis such as COVID-19, it’s smart to have a hearing plan in place to communicate simply and clearly before heading to the doctor’s office.
If you begin to experience symptoms of a cold, or flu, or become ill, start with a phone call to your doctor before heading to any medical facility. Your doctor will give you instructions on what to do next. Should he or she suggest you visit their office or go to the hospital, request they call or conference with a friend or loved one when you meet with them to act as an extra set of eyes and ears for you. It is important to have someone you trust to listen to what the healthcare professionals have to say and ask valuable questions on your behalf. This will help you feel safe and give you confidence about any decisions that need to be made regarding medications or other doctor recommendations.
Do you already wear hearing aids? If you do, don’t forget to wear them to your appointment or to the medical facility. Be sure to pack extra batteries and any accessories that go with your devices, such as chargers, charging cords, or other helpful items. And, given that items can easily get lost, consider labeling them with your name or carrying everything in a small bag or case to keep them organized and together during your visit or stay. You will want to be fully prepared to ensure your hearing aids are ready and working hard for you! And, as always, it is important to remember good hygiene when it comes to your hearing aids. For example, do not let others touch your hearing aids, and be sure to wash your hands before and after you change batteries or place the hearing aids in your ears.
Being prepared to hear well will help you navigate any situation more easily during the COVID-19 outbreak.
